Classic imaging appearance of a porcelain aorta

A porcelain aorta is characterized by severe circumferential calcification of the ascending aorta and arch. This condition poses significant challenges for cardiac surgery due to the difficulty of clamping the aorta. This condition, primarily caused by atherosclerosis, is prevalent among the elderly and individuals with valve or coronary artery disease.

Mucormycosis in trio of COVID-19, diabetes mellitus and renal disease: Exemplified in six cases

Mucormycosis was an important complication in COVID-19 particularly during Delta strain of SARS-CoV-2 infections. In this manuscript we report six cases of mucormycosis in patients presenting with COVID-19, along with diabetes mellitus, and renal complications.

Effects of stem cell exosomes and sanqi-derived exosome-like nanoparticles on oxidative stress in skin cells

As the primary barrier against external damage, human skin is highly susceptible to oxidative stress, leading to cellular dysfunction. This study is the first to investigate the reparative effects and synergistic mechanisms of Mesenchymal Stem Cell-derived Exosomes (MSC-Exos) and Sanqi-derived Exosome-like Nanoparticles (SENs).

A rare parasitic cause of cholangitis: Fasciola hepatica

A case of cholangitis caused by live Fasciola hepatica is presented. The patient, diagnosed with cholangitis, was treated with 10 mg/kg oral triclabendazole after the parasite was removed with Endoscopy Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

Prospective ECG-triggered axial scanning: The impact of phase acquisition protocols on motion artefacts

This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the impact of relative and absolute phase acquisition protocols on motion artefacts under varying heart rates, Heart Rate Variability (HRV), and in the presence of arrhythmias.

When normal becomes giant: Sigmoid sinus arachnoid granulation in a 5-year-old

Small arachnoid membrane protrusions into the dural venous sinuses that aid in the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid are known as Arachnoid Granulations (AGs). AGs are typically asymptomatic and only a few millimeters in size, but they can sometimes grow into Giant Arachnoid Granulations (GAGs).

Unusual presentation of hydatid disease: Solitary pancreatic cyst

We report the case of a 54-year-old man with a history of sigmoidectomy for volvulus who developed chronic colonic dilatation requiring repeated colonic exsufflation. Abdominal CT imaging revealed pancolonic distension and a large (11 × 9 × 13 cm) multilocular pancreatic tail cyst causing segmental portal hypertension (Figure 1).

Internal migration of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube after 11 years of retention

Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) tubes require timely replacement to prevent complications like degradation, migration, and buried bumper syndrome. Prolonged retention poses significant risks.

Septo-optic-dysplasia: A case report and clinical insights

Septo-Optic Dysplasia (SOD) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a triad of optic nerve hypoplasia, absence of the septum pellucidum, and hypothalamopituitary dysfunction. It was first described in 1941 and has been associated with young maternal age, maternal drug use, viral infections, and genetic predisposition.

The role of the emergency nurse in trauma management

Trauma is a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Rapid and effective management of trauma patients from the moment they are admitted to the emergency department directly impacts survival rates and long-term prognosis.

Mechanisms of the carcinogenic effects of alcohol

According to the Global Burden of Disease project (based on a group of mortality-related indicators), the World Health Organization states that alcohol is a major cause of high mortality in the world, contributing to 1.8 million deaths per year.
